Telling the truth this days has become an Herculean task. In order to affirm and buttress the truth, sometimes one will be forced or compelled to swear in the name of a deity.
Christians are not left out in this act of Swearing. It is sometimes required in some religious functions to swear in God's name as a symbol of saying the truth. But what does the scripture say about Swearing in God's name. Let's find out together!
Looking at Christ's sermon on the mount; Jesus expressly charged believers and christians in Matthew 5:34-37; "But I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God's throne. Nor by the earth; for it is his footstool: neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King. Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black. But let your communication be yes,yes; Nay, may: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil".
The world we live in is so full of lies. Lies in the relationship, lies in the home, lies in the hospitals, lies in the schools, lies in the streets, lies in the workplace, lies in the government, and even lies in the church?
It takes courage and godly fear to tell people the truth because lying has become a norm and a generally accepted Enterprise everywhere. People don't see anything wrong in defending errors in order to get a contract. Some can go as far as reducing their age to fit in for a job interview.
It is the awareness of these lying syndromes that makes swearing in God's name the only way to get the truth yet men are not afraid to swear even when caught in the web of lies.
Be it as it may, God still frown at the act of Swearing in his name no matter the circumstance.
The truth should be told even if no one cares about it. As time pass by the truth will unveil itself and everyone will know that you are a different breed and a conveyor of the truth.
The more you swear in God's name the more you make yourself an object of scrutiny because next time you say the truth no one will believe you not until you swear again. Must you swear all your life?
Let's uphold the truth and ignore every form of swearing. Whether it is convenient or not let our Yes be yes and our No, no. There is great danger and judgment those who practice this unholy act of Swearing in God's name. Be known for your integrity and your dignity will know no bounds.
