When you confess your sins to God, how do you know he has forgiven you? How can you be confident that you have been forgiven, when nobody spoke to you? Most Protestant churches make this mistake a lot. They believe Jesus is the only mediator between us and God. Most Pentecostal churches don't see any need to use confessionals. The Catholic Church and some group of Anglican see the need for confessionals.
The scripture was clear about this in James 5 vs 16. We were told to confess our sins to one another that we may be healed. Are you trying to tell me that 'James' doesn't know that Jesus Christ is the only mediator?
If we are children of light, then we need not live a life of secrecy anymore. The Bible says in 1 John 1:5 that "God is light, and in him is no darkness at all”. Someone who walks in the ways of the light cannot be a hypocrite. We should be truthful with our sins. Ephesians 4 vs 25 told us to speak the truth with our neighbors.
The best of all is Matthew 5 vs 23-24. God himself asked us to reconcile with our brother before coming to offer him any sacrifice.
Friends, you would agree with me that most of our sins on earth is against our neighbors. It is not wise to go to God for forgiveness without confessing to your neighbor first. Even when the sin is not against our neighbor, it is still advisable to confess to a priest, pastor or an elder in the church.
There is this joy and believe that comes with confessing to someone. When I tell someone about my sin, I feel a big load have been lifted off my shoulder. Confessing your sins to someone shows how sorry you are. God himself would be so pleased with you. Always see God in people.
Our Lord and savior Jesus Christ remains the one and only mediator between us and God. Therefore, after confessing your sins to your neighbor, you must come to God and ask him for the ultimate forgiveness. If your neighbor can forgive and pray for you, then God would gladly forgive you and even throw a welcome back party for you in heaven.
If you are a Catholic, always go to the priest for confessions. Even the pope goes for confession. And if you are not a Catholic, you can meet your pastor, an elder in the church or any brother of yours. Just make sure you say your sins out. When you remember the need to confess your sins to others, you would think twice before sinning again.
I would conclude with this saying by John Piper. "Honesty and purity of heart involve continual admission and confession of sin to appropriate people in our lives".
