John's Mission was NOT to Baptize with Water. Here is his Mission.

John's Mission was NOT to Baptize with Water

John, the forerunner of Jesus Christ, known across the nations of the earth as John the Baptist, was sent for a different mission, rather than to baptize. Though many non Christian, and even some Christians, believe that baptising Israel, was his mission, and have even made a doctrine out of it. But it's not.

What Then Is His Mission?

John born to Elisabeth and Zachariah the priest at their old age has been ordained from the womb to be the forerunner of the Christ. See these scriptures:

Luke 1:17 KJV

And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.

John 1:23 KJV

He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Esaias.

From the above scriptures, it should be clearer now. His mission was to Make straight the way of the Lord, by making ready a people prepared for the Lord.

So, why was John Baptising Israel?

Baptism was only a tool given to John by God to identify Jesus Christ. And afterwards, announce him to Israel.

John 1:25-26,29-31 KJV

And they asked him, and said unto him, Why baptizest thou then, if thou be not that Christ, nor Elias, neither that prophet? [26] John answered them, saying, I baptize with water: but there standeth one among you, whom ye know not; [29] The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world. [30] This is he of whom I said, After me cometh a man which is preferred before me: for he was before me. [31] And I knew him not: but that he should be made manifest to Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water.

Because no one had seen the father, there was need for someone whom the people are familiar with to introduce him to the world.

John 1:33 KJV

And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost.

In a nutshell, John the Baptist's Mission was to announce the Messiah to Israel. And his baptism is an avenue and, a platform to both prepare the people for his (Christ) unveiling to Israel, even though he has been with them. And for him to be able to identify the Christ amongst the people. For he confessed that he doesn't know him as well, but was gives hint to know him by God.

John 1:33 KJV

And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost.
