In Revelation 21:16, John the beloved had seen the vision of the New Jerusalem which was coming down from heaven as revealed by Jesus Christ to him. This New Jerusalem came out to be "the New heaven and the New earth" that began the chapter.
In the verse above, John said that "the city", which means the New Jerusalem; "lies foursquare, with its width the same as its length. And he[the angel] measured the city with the rod, and all its dimensions were equal—12,000 stadia in length and width and height."
Firstly, the word "foursquare" in the verse was given to John by the Holy Spirit to convey a description of the heavenly community that has spiritual boundaries and extents. That is, the New Jerusalem, which is the kingdom of God, will have its landmarks as though it were seen physically to be bounded at its four sides. These boundaries are spiritual qualities and nature of God, without which no can see God. (Hebrews 12:14)
Furthermore, space and time in the world of spirits cannot be described because there, they are not material—they can only be felt or understood by the Spirit.(2 Corinthians 12:1–10). Thus, John had to be in the spirit to grasp and perceive those heavenly concepts.
Therefore, the "length" of the New Jerusalem is nothing but the quality of love lifestyle that the angels or saints that make up the heavenly community have possessed. In other words, in heaven, the Lord's presence is always perceived and seen as being on the East Direction, (Ezekiel 43:1–2), and thus as the Sun.(Psalm 36:9; 84:11; Revelation 22:5). So, the effects of how close or distant in heart anyone is to Him determines their proximity in the kingdom of God.
The "breadth" of the New Jerusalem is also nothing but the quality of wisdom or truth that make up heaven. In other words, since the Lord is the Sun of heaven, (Revelation 22:5), He gives out His influence or presence in the form of warmth (Love) and light(Truth). So, the extension of this light/truth forms the breadth of the New Jerusalem.
Above all, the "height" of the New Jerusalem, is the quality of the product of the love and truth of God on the people. This is why he said, "its width is the same as its length and height", making it a perfect kingdom, where nothing unclean or unholy can be found.(Revelation 21:16–27).
Consequently, the whole city, the New Jerusalem will be 12000 stadia, equal in length, breadth and height, making it a perfect and complete kingdom of the righteous and saints that have been washed in the precious and spotless blood of Christ.
