Scientifically, the benefits of side sleeping include: it alleviates various medical conditions such as congestive heart failure, sleep apnea and acid reflux. It also prevents the development of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's.

For a healthier heart, right side sleeping is essential. In a study in 2003, 75 patients with congestive heart failure were examined with 75 control subject. The patients avoided sleeping on their left sides because of discomfort, this discomfort however wasn't felt when sleeping on their right side. Since your heart is on the left side of your chest region, sleeping on that side presses your heart against the chest cavity while right side sleeping puts no pressure on your heart.

Right side sleeping lowers your heart rate and blood pressure, thereby calming you.

Side sleeping also controls snoring and prevents sleep apnea.

In Islam also, it is Sunnah to sleep on your right side and face the Qibla. When the Prophet Muhammed (Peace Be Upon Him) laid down to sleep, he would sleep on his right side. Sleeping on your stomach is not permissible in Islam as this is the way Shaytan (Satan or devil) sleeps.

It has been proven scientifically that sleeping on your stomach is not healthy and can lead to temporal dyspnea and neck pain.
