Five Idols In The Heart Of A Christian

Idols are the things that distracts you from the ever-loving God, the Alpha and Omega. An idol is anything more important to you than God, anything that you seek to give you what only God can give.

Most Christians have idols they worship unknown to them. God told Ezekiel (Ezekiel 14:3)" Son of man, those leaders have set up idols in your heart. They have embraced things that will make them fall into sin. Why should I listen to their requests?".

God specifically warned us about idols in Exodus 20:3 "You must not have any other god but me"(NLT). An idol is anything that takes the place God should rightly hold in your heart.

Five Idols In The Heart Of A Christian

1. People

Many people in our lives can take the front seat, consuming our thoughts and times. This could be your husband/wife, child, boss, friends, public figure etc. In some cases, it can even be your Pastor.

2. Social Media

Most people live all their lives on social media. They can do anything just to be "online". Social Media is good but when you get addicted to it and it becomes something that takes all of your time, it becomes an idol.

3. Wealth

Scripture tells us the story of a rich ruler who had everything but was also seeking the kingdom of heaven. Jesus told him to sell his possessions and give to the poor and follow him but this man turned back ( The book of Mark 10:17-21).

Jesus did not have a problem with the man being rich but He knew that the man loved his money more than the Kingdom of God he was seeking. Wealth was his idol.

4. Self

We are a self- obsessed people. We easily slip into self-elevation mode. God wants us to willingly surrender ourselves to Him so that we can be all that He has created us to be- to glorify Him.

5. Approval

Whenever we fail to obey when prompted by the Holy Spirit for fear of what others might think, we have fallen into the trap of idolatry. In valuing man's approval more than God's, we show where our loyalties lie.

We can break free from the trap of idolatry by totally yielding ourselves to God. By so doing, He will remove all the idols in your heart and beautify your life.
