What Some Muslims May Not Know About Lying

Introduction

Lying is the comprehensive negative of truth. So, anything that is untrue and deliberately intended to deceive another someone is a lie. A lie can be anything spoken or written that is completely or partially unfounded, imagined, made-up, misrepresented or exaggerated.

For example, if a person is to deliberately state that a narration from him was from a Khalifa, then this would be a lie. Likewise, commending someone out of proportion is also a form of a lie.

Lying is a Disease of the Heart

Lying and deception are common problems and are seeds of other problems that occur on an individual and the general public. Lies are spoken and written on social media platforms, in business and personal transactions, by Muslims and non-Muslims equivalent, although the degree, dimension and regularity may differ.

Lying is against human personality and physiology, and like any other disease, it has its unique signs and symptoms.

Forms of Lying

The worst form of lying is to do so upon Allah, the creator and His Messenger which is to falsely associate things to them. Allah Almighty Says in the Quran:

“And if he (Muhammad saw) had made up about Us some (false) sayings, We would have seized by the right hand; then We would have cut from him the aorta.” (Quran 69:44-46)

“And do not conceal testimony, for whoever conceals it – his heart is indeed sinful” (Quran 2:283)

“And do not mix the truth with falsehood or conceal the truth while you know [it].” [Quran 2:42]

Allah says in The Quran:

“Indeed Allah does not guide one who is a transgressor and a liar.” (Quran 40:28)

Another verse:

“Indeed, Allah does not guide he who is a liar and [confirmed] disbeliever.” (Quran 39:3)

Prophet Muhammad (saw) said:

“Indeed, truth leads to virtue and virtue leads to Paradise, and a truthful person continues to speak the truth until he becomes the most truthful person. Lies lead to evil and evil leads to Hell, and a liar continues to lie until he is listed as a high ranking liar before Allah.” (Sahihul Bukhari)
