Open my lips O Lord, and my mouth shall proclaim your praise create in me a clean heart O God, and renew a right spirit within me.
Cast me not away from your presence and take not your holy Spirit from me, give me the joy of your saving help again and sustain me with your bountiful Spirit.
—From Psalm 51
Lord God, Maker and King of the universe to whom all honor, glory, praise, and worship are due; it is a right and proper thing at all times, in all places and in all circumstances to give you our most hearty thanks and praise especially for your Son Jesus Christ, who died to take away our sins and the sins of the entire world. He rose again from the dead and sits at your right hand where He rules over all things, including the things we cannot understand.
Lord Jesus, you calmed the raging storm and tamed the surging sea—calm the tempest of indecision and cure the seasickness within our soulsForgive our faint-heartedness. Grant us not just the courage to do the right thing, but also the wisdom to figure out just what that right thing is. Reassure us Lord, that even if the right course of action hurts us in the cShort run, that you will ultimately reward our faithfulness and keep us safe.
O Lord, your Holy Word commands us to be joyful in all things, and to give thanks for trials and hardships. We understand that life is a test, that you only give a hard test to a good student, that you never trip up a slow student with an impossibly difficult test—so we rejoice that you have found us to be good students. We thank you for refining us in the fire as one refines gold, because it means that in your sight we as valuable as gold. Therefore, we thank you for the hardships that beset us, because we know you sent them to train and improve us. We are especially grateful for these hardships. Grant us wisdom and insight to understand the ultimate benefit you bring us through these hardships.
Lord, of all the gods under heaven to which people pray to you, the One True God, are the only one who took upon mortal flesh, who died and who transcended death in resurrection. You are the only one who can help us in our mortal anxiety. Comfort us, so that we may know that you who conquered death will not allow it to conquer us.
Drive far from us all snares of the enemy; send your Holy Spirit to fill us, to guide and strengthen us, to protect us from our own weaknesses; send your holy angels to counsel and defend us. Send us into the world to do your will.
Pray thanksgivings and petitions for yourselves and others.
We do not ask these things on our own authority, for before you we have none but in the name of your only begotten Son Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you in your glory in the unity of the Holy Spirit, as one God now and forever, AMEN.
Conclude with the Lord’s Prayer:
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy Name,
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those
who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
and the power, and the glory,
for ever and ever. Amen.
Lord God, almighty and everlasting Father, you have brought us in safety to this new day. Preserve us with your mighty power, so that we won’t fall into sin or be overcome by adversity. And in all we do, direct us so that we will do your will, so that when we end this day, we will rejoice in your providence and grace; through Jesus Christ our Lord. AMEN.
