This Church building
was demolished yesterday , Tuesday 23rd June, 2020 in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State Capital as the church activity was ongoing.
I think the reason was due to the violation of the guideline rules documented by the government to curb the spread of the virus.
Ahead of the reopening of Churches, the State Government approved some guidelines to the State Christian Association of Nigeria, (CAN), so as to curtail the spread of the pandemic.
According to Charles Udoh, the State Commissioner for information who announced this in a statement to the media said "the State Government was confident that CAN, being a body full of integrity, would do everything within its jurisdiction to ensure that all churches adhere strictly to these guidelines as violators will be prosecuted.
He said a Joint Monitoring Team has been set up in each Senatorial District, comprising representatives of Government, Security Agencies and CAN.
“Citizens and Residents are enjoined to observe all prescribed guidelines on religious and social gatherings as well as physical distancing while wearing face masks,” the statement added.
The government particularly warned that churches who have large number of worshippers should reduce the number and therefore observe physical distancing.
Yet, a large number of worshippers turn out enmasse yesterday for prayer.
