Castel Gandolfo is a 135-acre estate in the Alban hills of Rome. The estate was specially made to as a safe haven for every reigning Catholic Pope and other members of the Catholic Papacy.

Pope Francis who is the present sovereign ruler of the Vatican City State and leader of all the Catholic Churches in the world today shocked the world after he refused to live in the Castel Gandolfo after he became the Pope.

As it was, the past Popes did make use of the place.
