President Muhammadu Buhari through his special assistant on media and publicity Garba Shehu has wished Pope Francis a speedy recovery after he underwent colon diverticulitis surgery in Italy.

According to a statement from the Vatican Spokesman obtained by CNN, it was the Pope himself that went to Gemelli hospital in Rome for a scheduled surgery which causes discomfort in the colon and is very common in aged people. The 84-year-old Pope Francis was operated on by Professor Sergio Alfieri, a specialist in Colon and one of the best in the world.

In reaction to this, President Muhammadu Buhari joined other world leaders to pray for the Pope and also wish him a speedy recovery. He also called on all Nigerians to join hands and pray for the pontiff.
"President Muhammadu Buhari has sent a get-well message to the Head of the Catholic Church, Pope Francis as he heads in for a scheduled surgery of the colon. The President called for prayers from Nigerians and the global community as the Pontiff goes in for this routine operation", the statement reads.

According to the US National Institutes of Health, Colon diverticulitis is a common disease among the elderly in the United States. It causes a small sac to grow in the wall of the colon and it causes discomfort and sometimes leads to bleeding.
