TEXT: ESTHER 3: 1 -6
TOPIC: FAITH IS IN DANGER
Haman was a descendant of Agag and served in Susa under King Xerxes. His promotion to that position followed the execution of two prominent leaders who planned to assassinate King Xerxes. Mordecai had exposed their plot, but he was never rewarded for it.
The promotion placed Haman above every other ruler, except the King himself, and came with an order that every citizen must bow the knee before Haman! Mordecai refused to bow before a mere mortal. We are not given any reason for Mordecai’s refusal. But we can deduce from his confession in verse 4 (“he had told them he was a Jew”) that he must have interpreted Haman’s order to mean submitting to idolatry! Mordecai must have also known the implications of refusing to bow before Haman. Yet his stand showed that he trusted God to protect him, even if he faced execution.
Would you fear man who can only kill the flesh but has no power over the spirit and eternity?
Because my Redeemer lives, I can face today and tomorrow even when the world sets itself against me. I will do this in the power that raised Jesus from the death which so powerfully works in me, in Jesus name, Amen.
