The significance of Easter and how it is celebrated in Nigeria

Easter is a holiday celebrated by Christians all around the world. It marks the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the tomb on the third day after his crucifixion.

Easter comes after the period called Lent in which Christians set aside time for fasting, prayers and repentance. Lent begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Good Friday. The Lenten season lasts for 40 days. It was also during this period Jesus was tempted by Satan in the wilderness. This 40 day Lent period was established by Pope Gregory 1 using the 40 day pattern of Israel, Moses, Elijah and Jesus' time in the wilderness.

In Nigeria, Easter is celebrated with a joyous mood around the country. A public holiday is declared on Good Friday and Easter Monday to mark the celebrations.

Some people buy or sew new clothes just like during Christmas. Others go to recreational parks with their families to have picnic or just enjoy the serene environment. Some Christians also share food with their neighbors
