3 wrong impressions some Christians have about paying tithe

Payment of tithe is an obligation given to us by God Himself. This obligation is expected to be followed to the latter but the problem is that some of us are not following it rightly. We have many wrong impressions about it which I want to share with you. The aim of this is to prevent you from doing it wrongly henceforth.

The Wrong impressions include;

1. I can pay any amount; tithe is tithe.

The first wrong impression people do have is the fact that they pay their tithes anyhow they feel like. While some underpay, others overpay claiming that the one-tenth is too small for God. No matter how rich you must have become, it is important you know that overpaying your tithe is wrong.

The book of Leviticus 27:30 says

"One-tenth of the produce of the land, whether grain from the fields or fruit from the trees, belongs to the LORD and must be set apart to him as holy". NLT

2. Tithing is optional.

Another wrong impression people have about tithing is that it is not compulsory. Who told you it is not? As long as you serving Him and enjoying His blessings, tithing is a must-do affair. If you read the last part of where we just read from, you will understand that it is not optional.

Furthermore, God likened those who don't pay their tithes to robbers. He made it known that if you fail to pay your tithes, you are robbing Him (God). Let us read from the book of Malachi chapter 3:8

"Will a man rob God? Yet you have robbed Me! But you say, ‘In what way have we robbed You?’ In tithes and offerings". NKJV

3. I can pay my tithes anywhere but not in the church.

This impression mostly applies to those who believe the Church is not using the paid tithes for the purposes it is meant for. For that reason, they decided to channel their tithes to the Needy and the orphanage homes. In as much as you are doing what is right, note that you are doing it wrongly.

Let us read what God is saying in Malachi 3:10.

Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the LORD Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it. NIV

You can decide to help the Needy and Orphanage with your 90% but not with God's 10%. He made it clear that it should be brought into His Storehouse so that food can be sufficient there. It is the decision of the pastor/priest to distribute it to the Needy and not yours. Do your part and leave it for God.

Have you ever had any of these impressions before? Do you think it is right to give your tithes to the Needy? Please share this article
