Deeper meaning of Mathew 16:18 you need to know

There have been a lot of misconceptions concerning this particular Bible verse. It has generated a lot of arguments among Christians. Some believe and teach that Peter is the Rock that Christ was talking about. While some believe that it was Christ Himself that is the Rock mentioned in this verse.

So in other to understand what Christ is saying here we need to study the Scriptures deeply. After all, the Bible teaches that if we are to understand the teachings of God, we must "compare Scriptures with Scriptures" (Isaiah 28:9,10). So who is the "Rock"?.

Throughout the Scriptures, Jesus is compared to a "Rock". In Deuteronomy 32:4 Moses says," He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all His ways are judgement: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is He". Hannah sang in(1samuel 2:2), "There is none holy as the Lord: for there is none beside thee: neither is there any rock like our God". The psalmist declared, The Lord is my rock......" for who is God save the Lord? or who is a rock save our God?"(Psalm 18:2,31).

Paul testifies to this truth. He wrote," And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual rock that followed them: and that rock was Christ"(1corinthians 10:4).

Peter also testified that Christ is the rock. He wrote in 1Peter 2:6-8, Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, behold, I lay in Sion a chief cornerstone, elect, precious: and he that believes on him shall not be confounded. Unto you therefore which believe He is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner, and a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them who stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed".

These Bible verses clearly show and teach that Christ is the rock. Those who believe and teach that Christ built His church upon Peter have no ground to stand on. First of all, the gates of hell prevailed against Peter when with cursing he denied the Lord. (Mathew 26:69-75). Second, Peter was not the leader of the Christian Church. It was James the brother of Jesus. (see Acts 15:13-21, Galatians 1:19). It was this James that the Apostles go to for counsel, and who presided over the Jerusalem councils(Acts 12:17,15:13-21,21:18).

So if Peter is not the rock why did Christ say, " thou art Peter, and upon this rock will I build my Church"?

The Scripture tells us in Mathew 16:13 that Jesus asked his disciples, saying, "Who do men say that I the Son of man am"?and Simon Peter made the confession saying, "Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God" (Mathew 16:16). So, it was on that confession made by Peter that Jesus said, "on this rock, I will build my Church"

The Church of God is built on that solid Rock, that Jesus is the " Christ(Messiah), the Son of the living God"
