Maggots, or fly larvae, are not a common occurrence after an abortion. However, in rare cases, they can develop if there is an infection or if the aborted tissue is not completely removed from the uterus. With the help of WebMD, we discovered several reasons why abortion can lead to development of maggots.
If the aborted tissue is not removed completely, it can provide a breeding ground for flies, which can lay their eggs on the tissue. The eggs can then hatch into maggots, which can cause further complications and infections.
Infection after an abortion can also lead to the development of maggots. Bacterial infections, particularly those caused by certain types of bacteria such as Clostridium perfringens, can cause tissue necrosis (death of tissue) which can attract flies to lay their eggs and eventually develop into maggots.
It is important to seek medical attention immediately if you notice maggots or any unusual symptoms after an abortion. Your healthcare provider can examine you and recommend appropriate treatment to prevent further complications.
