The corruption of the name "Igbo" to "Ibo" have been widely used by outsiders or non-Igbos to group the Igbo people. This notion however, could have had the implications of tongue as some people find it difficult to add the "g" alphabet in the term.
Others however see it as the original term of the Igbo People since it is also found in some colonial documents. On the contrary, some 8gbo scholars and traditionalists view it as a passive term for Ndi-Igbo
Regarding to this sequence, an Igbo man from Anambra identified as Amazi Ejiofor who is a prestigious Igbo traditionalist and apologist tends to correct the term as he give logical differences about the two terms. This happened as one Ngozi from Agbor in Delta State, a final year student of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka was conducting a research interview for his final year project.
According to Mazi, he argued that the corruption of the term "Igbo" to "Ibo" is a serious misconception of the term as he rekindled that the two terms obviously represent two different things.
Igbo according to him are the peopling of the regions that made up the former Eastern Nigerian and some part of the former Midwest Nigeria, the Anioma people who are found in 9 LGAs of Delta State. Their name are Igbo or Ndi-Igbo since antecedents, and not Ibo. He quarrelled.
"Using Ibo for Igbo is a distort to us the and to History, for Ibo is a later invested colonial term which degrade the historical Igbo name." Mazi added
He emphatically denoted that Igbo represent the identity of the Igbo speaking people across the world, while Ibo is a Slavic invented name of the 13th -20th century by the European slave raiders.
Do you think Mazi is right in his view? Though the term is true, but do you think every Igbo reactions the same way when being called an "Ibo?" Share your Comments and suggestions.
