Animals That Have The Ability To Regrow Body Parts

In biology, regeneration is the process of renewal, restoration, and tissue growth that makes genomes, cells, organisms, and ecosystems resilient to natural fluctuations or events that cause disturbance or damage.

Sometimes, animals even cast off a part of their body on purpose. They might feel threatened, and they can re-grow it later — this is called autotomy. Check out some of the animals that have this awesome ability!

1. Star Fish

According to Nationalgeographic.com, starfish have an amazing ability to regenerate lost or amputated body parts. They can regrow body parts even if as much as half of their body is missing. Some types of starfish can regrow a whole body from a single arm. The brittle-star also has the ability to regenerate body parts.

2. Salamanders can regrow entire limbs and regenerate parts of major organs. Immune cells called macrophages are critical in the early stages of regenerating lost limbs. So if you amputate or injure a third of the heart, of the pumping machinery of the heart, it will regrow that in the course of about 30 days to 60 days. Comparative to humans, where a tiny, little blockage in our heart vessel will lead to extreme damage and eventually death.

3. Crayfish

Like other crustaceans, Crayfish do have the ability to regenerate lost limbs such as their legs, antennae, and portions of their tail. This regrowth process generally takes from a few months to a year depending on the age of the crayfish.
