4 Biblical Reasons For Marriage

When the purpose of a thing is not known, abuse is inevitable. When you don't know the biblical reasons behind marriage, you may abuse it. God, the author of marriage has reasons for it, and knowing some of these reasons will make you enjoy lasting peace in your home.

Below are 4 biblical reasons for marriage

1. For companionship. When God made the heavens and the earth, He made other creatures to live in it. The man, Adam was the last of His creation and he gave him the power to rule over all the things he has created. But Adam was the only being that looked like himself among other things that God created. His loneliness made God to create a woman that will keep him company. According to Genesis 2:18, “And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone..."

So, God instituted marriage to make a man have a companion and not feel lonely.

2. For a good helpmate. Another biblical reason for marriage is for the man to have someone who will be there to offer him help anytime he needs it. Genesis 2:18 says, "...I will make him a help meet for him.”

This should therefore let a man know that his wife is to help him and not to assume responsibility for everything. It should also make a wife know that she is in the marriage to help her husband and support him in any way she could.

3. To prevent fornication. God instituted marriage to prevent fornication among us. He created us and put our organs in our bodies. He knew there will be a time when we will need it so He made a plan for it ahead of time. 1 Corinthians 7:2 says, "Nevertheless, to avoid fornication, let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband.” When a man and a woman are therefore married, they are free before God to perform their duty.

4. To have children. Finally, the last biblical reason for marriage is to give birth to children. According to the book of Genesis 1:28 “And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it..."

By fruitful and multiplication, God wants human beings to increase and fill the earth which is possible by giving birth to children.

But I must say that the presence of children in a marriage is not the only thing that validates a marriage. Having children is just one of the reasons for marriage. With or without children, you are to keep your love for each other.
