There are hundreds of these road safety and traffic signs, Motorists and other road users are expected to be mindful of them anytime they are on the road driving or riding. From country to country, each of this signs are similar and means almost the same thing.
In Nigeria, the agency responsible for the creation and enforcement of road safety and traffic signs is Federal Road Safety Corps. They are everywhere in the country to ensure compliance to road safety regulations.
Each of the traffic signs have different connotation and meaning at different parts and location of the road.
Importance Of Traffic Signs
The importance of traffic signs cannot be over emphasis in the sense that it provide valuable information to drivers and other road users. They represent rules that are in place to keep you safe, and help to communicate messages to drivers and pedestrians that will not just maintain order, but as well reduce accidents on our roads.
Most traffic signs make use of pictures, rather than words so that they are easy to understand and can be interpreted by people who speaks a variety of languages. For this reason it's important that you know what each picture represents, and that you use them to inform your driving. Neglecting these signs can be dangerous and disastrous, and failure to observe the traffic signs could result in a serious accident or a fine.
Traffic signs comes in a different shapes and colours, and each has a specific meaning. The different shapes and colours are there to help road users identify a sign as quickly as possible without stopping or interrupting drivers.
According to the Nigerian Road Safety Commission, the various road safety and traffic signs are classified into four (4) categories, they include:
1. Regulatory: This comprises control, command, prohibition, reservation
2. Warning: This consist of road layout and direction of movement. Warning are usually printed in sharp red colour to warn drivers and other road users of the danger ahead
3. Guidance: It consists of location, route markers and direction
4. Temporary: These are command and prohibition.
