Obinwanne Okeke, popularly known as Invictus Obi is a young Igbo man who hailed from Anambra state. He has been sentenced to a 10-year jail term after being found guilty of carrying out fraud targeting Unatrac Holding Limited.
The arrest of Invictus Obi by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) was unbelievable to many Nigerians, he was seen as a hardworking Nigerian that is making it big in different legitimate businesses. Immediately the news of his arrest went viral on social media, several celebrities deleted pictures they have taken with Obi from their Social Media accounts.
Invictus Obi was profiled by Forbes and International media, he was projected as one of the young Africans making a great impact in the continent.
Just like Ramon Olorunwa Abbas (Hushpuppi), Obinwanne Okeke has been taken down by the FBI after carrying out a thorough investigation about their fraudulent activities on the internet swindling unsuspecting internet users of their hard-earned money.
As made known by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, both Hushpuppi and Invictus Obi were into business email compromise attack, a form of cybercrime that makes use of email fraud to launch an attack against a corporation deceiving the employees to send money into their account.
While Hushpuppi is still having a full day at the court of law, Invictus obi has been given the bitter dose of the law. He will be spending 10 years of his adult life behind bars and live a life of being tagged a fraudster for a lifetime.
As a fraudster, both Hushpuppi and Invictus Obi made the following mistakes that helped the security operatives to easily track down their fraudulent activities.
1. According to the investigation carried out by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, some of the email accounts that were used to perform cyber crime activities by Hushpuppi and Invictus Obi were traced back to their online profile. The internet keeps a record of user’s activities, it takes some level of smartness to remain anonymous on the internet, which was lacking in both Hushpuppi and Obi.
2. While Hushpuppi was busy showing off on Instagram the splendor life he had acquired through business deals he could not give a logical explanation, Invictus Obi made himself visible by getting involved with Forbes and international media. It was an easy job to carry out for the investigators, they failed to learn that not being traceable and remaining anonymous is one of the rules of the game. They created unnecessary media show around themselves that may have contributed to them being arrested.
3. Hushpuppi and Invictus Obi stayed too long in the game. No matter how smart a criminal, it is just a matter of time before he is caught by security operatives. The bigger you are when it comes to cybercrime, the easier it becomes for investigators to track down your fraudulent activities The best decision a man can make is to stay away from crime, most criminals find it difficult to quit until they are arrested.
To make it legitimately without cutting corners is one of the peaceful ways to live; a life of fraud is so complicated that those fraudsters live with the fear of being caught virtually all the time.
Dear Reader, Could Hushpuppi and Invictus Obi have stayed out of the reach of the FBI? Drop your comment!
