Football is the most popular and best sport in the world. The varieties of competitions across the world make it amazing and sometimes life-threatening. There have been a lot of players that have been threatened for one reasons or the other in the game. One popular example is that of the late Andres Escobar.
Andres Escobar was a Colombian footballer who played as a defender. Born on 13 March, 1967, he had played for Young Boys BSC and the Colombian national team.
Escobar wore the jersey number 2 and he made his debut for the Colombia national team on March 30 1988 in a match Canada. During the famous 1994 FIFA World Cup although he did not partake in any of the games of the 1994 World Cup qualifier, Andres Escobar was called up for the World Cup.
While playing their second group match against the United States of America, Escobar tried to block a cross from John Harkes(American midfielder) but this was unsuccessful as he unintentionally deflected the ball into his own net. The match ended 2-1 in favour of USA. Although his teammates tried to console him but he took the blame upon himself. Some days after the elimination of Colombia from the World Cup, Escobar called his friends and they went to a bar in Medellin after been warned not to move out alone.
At the early hours of the next day, Escobar was alone in his car when three men appeared. After series of arguments, Andres Escobar was shot six times reportedly representing the number of times the football commentator said ‘Goal’ during the match. Escobar was thereafter rushed to the hospital where he died some minutes later.
On July 2, 1994, Humberto Castro Munoz(bodyguard for members of a powerful drug cartel in Colombia) was arrested and he confessed to the killing of Escobar. He was later sentenced to 43 years imprisonment although the sentence was reduced later.
