While many would lose focus on hearing the sound of gunshots and bomb blasts, Ziya'u Yusuf, a brave train driver plying the Kaduna-Abuja railway line defied fear to successfully transport his passengers to their destination despite an attack by bandits. A report has it that when the train was under bandit attack on 20 October 2021 at Rijana bridge, the driver ordered all the passengers to lie at the crew compartment to avoid bullets. The 33-year-old driver continued moving the train despite all odds till it stopped 7km after. During the return journey, he wasn't lily-livered, as he plied the same route despite the detonation of the rail track by bandits.
The heroic act displayed by Yusuf is commendable and he deserves a national award from the Federal Government of Nigeria. It should be noted that most drivers will refuse to embark on the return journey due to the attack, however, this driver reached his destination and returned without any casualty.
If Yusuf is honored by the Federal Government it will inspire other well-meaning Nigerians who have been giving their best in the cause of their duties not to relent. Additionally, young men will have a reason to display bravery in precarious situations.
Members of the public are admonished to emulate the bravery displayed by the train driver in their daily endeavors.
