Jos Passengers Massacre and Others : Only State Police Can End Killings

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) was established by the act of parliament under the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria of 1963. The Nigeria Police is a Federal goverment establishment as it is included in the exclusive legislative list.

State police remains the surest way of tackling the current security challenges like herdsmen and farmers' clashes in parts of the country.

We cannot police a country of this size with a police command that functions out Abuja. It is just impossible. There must have state police and community police.

Policing is always a local function. Anyone who is a policeman must be able to speak and understand the local language.

If a policeman does not understand the local language, he stands at a major disadvantage.

Some of what we have seen in many parts of the country, where we have had herdsmen killings and clashes with farmers, and the slow responses of the security agencies has been on the account of the fact that local policing is weak.

Recalls that on Saturday, August 14, some passengers passing through Jos were shot dead by gunmen who opened fire on their vehicles. The passengers were 92 in a convoy of five 18-seater buses when the gunmen attacked them.

The travellers were said to be returning from Bauchi state and heeding their way back to Ikare, Ondo State where they attended an event to commemorate the Islamic New Year.

Meanwhile, the 25 travellers killed have been buried in a mass grave at Dadonkowa cemetery.

The only solution to the unwarranted killings by militant herdsmen and hoodlums in the country is there fore some form of local policing, so that the state can decide how many security agencies are required.
