Before his suspension about three days ago, Mr Abba Kyari was a fearless and highly respected officer of the Nigerian Police Force (NPF). As a cop, he had to take several lifecost risks as he faced and successfully brought down a number of nightmarish criminal elements, including terrorists across the country. And one of the most fascinating aspects of his achievements is that he was often specially drated to face nagging outlaws. Examples of such dangerous assignments are the the arrest of: Evans (the Lagos-based billionaire Kidnapper), the notorious Taraba kidnap kigpin, Bala Hamisu (Wadume) and the killing of a former ESN Commander, the Dragon, in Imo State.
For his excellent fits at fighting criminals across the country, kyari has enjoyed many accolades and awards. Some of them are: standing ovation by the federal house of representatives, the best cop in Africa and Presidential recognition and award.
When the going was smooth with him, and his record of service looked clean, kyari was almost everyone's admiration. And his praises were always sung as a result. But in the middle of this, his hitherto unknown past unexpectedly struck him to the dismay of the watching and listening members of the public. What could have happened to so much disappoint anyone about the great policeman?
As it had happened, a certain internet fraudster, Ramon Abbas (Hushpuppi) who was arrested by the FBI of America in June, 2020, and has since been standing trial fingered the reputed cop as one of his accomplices. According to the former, he had bribed the latter with about #8 million to help him arrest and detain a companion of his, Kelly Chibuzor Vincent, who had threatened to expose him due to the unfavorable sharing formula of the $1.1 million they were trying to loot from a Qatari businessman.
Although, kyari has repeatedly denied the allegation, the fact that the FBI agents have tendered some seemingly convincing proofs, the Nigerian Police Force (NPF) was left with no other option but to suspend him until further Investigations unmask his innocence.
However, since the whole travail started, there have been mixed reactions from the members of the public with one of the divide standing by him, while the other is doing otherwise. But one important thing that is worth pointing out here is that for the NPF to be able to take the bold step of placing one of its best men on suspension is worthy of commendations. And that is partly because many people did not expect that it was capable of implementing such a great decision. So, the fact that there are some black sheep among its members should not call for the condemnation of all of them.
Going by the foregoing, even if the prwysently embattled Abba kyari is eventually found culpable of the charges pressed against him by Hushpuppi, it still does not mean that the entire officers of the NPF are corrupt.
