Couple arrested for poisoning 10-year-old over witchcraft suspicion

Akwa Ibom State Police Command arrested a certain Akan Umoh and his wife, Rita Umoh, for allegedly poisoning their son, Savior Umoh, on suspicion of witchcraft.

It was understood that the deceased had been poisoned to death after the administration of poisonous "evil beans" to eliminate witchcraft.

Command public relations officer Odiko Macdon in a statement on Tuesday said the duo were arrested by detectives from the Abak Division after a whistleblower.

The suspects, the statement said, confessed to their crimes.

The statement read in part: “On August 29, 2021, at approximately 4:30 pm, based on information received from a Mfon Francis of the village of Ekpat Iduot that an Akan Jimmy Umoh and his wife, Rita Jimmy Umoh, of the same address, conspired and poisoned to death her stepson, a certain Master Savior Jimmy Umoh, a 10 year old boy accused of witchcraft.

“The Abak Division detectives quickly reacted and arrested the duo of Akan and Rita Jimmy Umoh, who happen to be the deceased's father and mother-in-law, respectively.

"During questioning, the suspects confessed to administering the child a poisonous preparation called 'Evil Beans' to eliminate witchcraft, which, according to the prophecy, was the cause of their economic woes and health problems, including the poor academic performance of his other half -brothers and sisters.

“A search of the house revealed an inscription boldly written on the wall by the mother-in-law: 'The Savior is the witch of this house.' Photographs were taken as the corpse was removed and deposited in the morgue for autopsy ”

The statement further revealed that the command also arrested a local gun maker, one Ekike David, from the Nsit-Ubium local government area of ​​the state.

David was arrested with an AK-47 rifle, pump, pistol and 6 Dane rifles by a surveillance team attached to “A” Division located in Barracks Road, capital of Uyo Akwa Ibom State.

"The preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect (David) is a welder specializing in the manufacture and sale of locally made rifles and other types of firearms to criminal elements who use them to terrorize innocent members. public"

Macdon said state police commissioner Andrew Amiengheme had assured the perpetrators of the crimes would be prosecuted.

He called on members of the public to be vigilant and willing to give police and sister security agencies timely information that would help fight crime and criminality in the state.
