According to media reports, the Nigerian Army took the fight to the ESN where they suspected they were hiding, and since the clash there have been deep tensions in the area.
A source who spoke to the media about the clash said that residents of the town have abandoned their houses and run to neighbouring communities.
The source said that heavy shooting is going on in the town, and that some parts of the town are still enveloped in tension. The source added that officers of the Nigerian Army are currently locked in a battle with ESN operatives.
An eyewitness said that the problem started on Sunday when Fulani herdsmen shot a farmer on his farm, and still prevented people from rushing the farmer to the hospital for treatment. Their action provoked the sympathizers who then invited ESN members into the matter.
When the ESN members arrived at the scene, there was a bloodbath between them and the herdsmen, and eight people were confirmed dead, though it cannot be ascertained whether the victims were members of ESN or the herdsmen.
After that, a mosque in the community was set ablaze by angry youths in the area.
Some of the residents said that ESN members were in the bushes searching for the herdsmen and their cows. The residents said that they are afraid the herdsmen might come back for a reprisal attack.
The clash between the Nigerian Army and ESN has been attracting widespread condemnation from members of the public. Some said that even though they do not support the activities of ESN, what the Nigerian Army is not commendable.
Some said that the ESN members were only trying to defend the people who were being attacked by the Fulani herdsmen, and that the attack from the Nigerian Army was uncalled for.
