Natural disaster

2 Necessary Actions To Take As Flood Takes Over Section Of Lagos -Abeokuta Expressway (Photos)

Flood is one of the most common natural disaster in the country. It occurs when there is a temporary overflow of water onto land that is normally dry.

There are several things that can be done to prevent flood from happening in our roads. But, when the relevant authorities in charge of road construction fail to make adequate allowances for flood control, flooding becomes inevitable. Sometimes, when I think about the millions of naira the Nigerian government spend on road construction, I wonder why our roads are repeatedly flooded.

Hours ago, it was reported by the media that a section of the Lagos-Abeokuta expressway was taken over by flood on Sunday. Taking a look at the photos shared online by Punch Newspaper, one can only think about the socio-economic effect the flooded road will be having on road users who have already planned to use the road today. Many will not be able to go to work because of the nature of the flood.

With the current situation on ground, this writer is advising that these two actions should be taken.

1. Road users should desist from making use of the road for now until necessary precautions are taken to put an end to this particular issue at hand. Part of the report released stated that an Okada man and a pedestrian were carried away by the flood. Though it was not stated whether they lost their lives, one can only think about what could have happened to them judging by the nature of the flood.

2. Also, all authorities in charge of the road should do all they can to open up any drainage channels that are connected to the road. This will help reduce the volume of water on the road. Moreso, blocked channels should be opened so that this will not repeat itself again.
