Opinion: Joy Onoh's Murder And The Avoidable Mistakes That Should Not Be Overlooked

If Joy Onoh had known that she would not return from the delivery service she went to offer on the 19th of October 2021, she would have definitely skipped the sale for that day.

Joy was just a 24-year-old fresh graduate of Mass Communication from the Benue state University awaiting call-up from the National Youth Service Corps before she met her untimely death in the hands of suspected hoodlums who were alleged to have assaulted her sexually before murdering her in cold blood.

According to her friend, Patience Onueche who spoke to Punch Metro on Thursday, October 21, the victim was an online vendor who sold cloth to people who placed their order for some of her goods.

Narrating further, her friend said that Joy received a call from an unknown caller who ordered for a turtleneck sweater and also asked her to deliver it to a location around the North Bank area of Makurdi. Unfortunately, Joy was found dead the next day around the North Bank area she had gone to make the cloth delivery.

The mistakes that should not be overlooked in Joy's murder.

According to the narration Patience gave to Punch Metro, Joy came to meet her in Church around 5:30 p.m to collect the cloth, and she was to deliver it on the same day.

Analysing the narration given by Patience, the first mistake was the time of delivery. 5:30 p.m is already getting late for any type of goods delivery. The reason for this is that a seller could encounter some challenges on the road, such as traffic jams and other things that could delay the delivery. Delivering late in the evening is not advisable because it would not be long before it gets dark, and we are all aware of the danger associated with going to unknown places at night.

The second mistake was that Joy did not mention who the buyer was to any of the surrounding people. It is still unclear if the buyer was a friend or a total strange, only time and investigation will tell in this case. The buyer who called Joy to deliver the cloth should not be overlooked in this case because he or she is a suspect.

Lessons for online vendors.

It is not an easy job to be an online vendor, one has to upload several images to get a buyer. A potential buyer may not agree to the price tag of the product, and sometimes these sellers have to beat down the price just to win the customer over to their side for future patronization.

However, while trying to boost your sales as an online vendor, also try to be security conscious in your business. First, do not offer a delivery service to a private or unknown location. Be the one to choose the location for your delivery and make sure it is a public place. Secondly, always inform the surrounding people before going to deliver any product to your customers, it is, in fact, safer to go with someone.

Lastly, do not go to any location (known or unknown) late at night for delivery, it may be very dangerous for you.
