A couple, Ebiesuwa Abayomi Fredrick and Tinuola Idayat Oyegunle, his wife, were each sentenced to 40 years imprisonment.
Federal High Court Justice Joyce Abdulmalik, sitting in Ibadan, Oyo State, today, February 15, 2021, found them guilty on all four counts of conspiracy and acquisition by the Ibadan Zonal Office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, by pretense brought against them.
The couple fleeced one Dunni Olateru Olagbegi N53, 713, 260.00 (Fifty-Three Million, Seven Hundred and Thirteen Thousand, Two Hundred and Sixty Naira) in cash and bank transfer through a spiritual cleansing gambit in a classic advance fee fraud scheme to avoid the calamitous consequence of mysterious sudden death having heard a syndicated talk about a Ghana- Must-Go bag stuff
She was also fooled into cleaning up supposed USD bills by bringing money.
In May 2013, the victim had regularly boarded a taxi cab with three other passengers who, unknown to her, were members of the fraudsters' syndicate.
She heard three other alleged passengers arguing about a Ghana-Must-Go bag loaded with US dollars in the boot of the car as soon as she entered the vehicle.
Moments later, one of the members of the syndicate told her that she had to be cleaned up to avert sudden and unexplained death after hearing their conversation.
She was taken to an unknown destination, where she subsequently began giving different amounts in cash and bank payments totaling N53, 713, 260.00 (Fifty-Three Million, Seven Hundred and Thirteen Thousand, Two Hundred and Sixty Naira) to the defendants and the other members of the syndicate (to a large extent) to purchase instruments for the cleaning of U.S. Dollar notes, which she allegedly purchased from the U.S. Dollar notes.
In the course of the investigation, it was found that the second defendant, Tinuola Idayat Oyegunle's account residing in one of the banks of the third century, was paid over N9m (Nine Million Naira); apart from other funds traced to the first defendant, the account of Ebiesuwa Abayomi Fredrick.
Victoria East Park Hotel & Suite, located in Igbogbo, Ikorodu, Lagos State, was also found to have been constructed from the proceeds of the crime by the first defendant.
Justice Abdulmalik found the couple guilty of the four-count charge in his judgment today and sentenced each of them on each of the four charges to 10 years imprisonment. However, although the prison term of Ebiesuwa takes effect on June 19, 2017, when he was arrested, the time of Tinuola in the Custodial Centre will begin to count from May 26, 2017, when she was arrested.
The Judge also ordered that "Victoria East Park Hotel & Suite be sold and that the proceeds, if not up to N53, 713, 260.00 (Fifty-Three Million, Seven Hundred and Thirteen Thousand, Two Hundred and Sixty Naira), be returned to the victim in the case and that the balance be paid into the account of the Federal Government if it exceeds."
The sentences are meant to run simultaneously.
One of the counts reads: "That between 28 March 2014 at Ibadan, within the jurisdiction of this honorable court, you, Ebiesuwa Abayomi Fredrick, Tinuola Idayat Oyegunle and (others still at large) obtained by pretense, the sum of Nine Million, Three Hundred and Fifty-Two Thousand, One Hundred Naira (N9,352,100.00) only, from one Dunni Olateru-Olagbegi, under the pretense of one Dunni Olateru-Olagbegi, under the pretense of one Dunni Olateru-Olagbegi, under the pretense of one Dunni Olateru-Olagbegi."
