Despite the far cry of insecurity of lives and properties in recent years, most especially in the last few months, under the Buhari-led administration, Governor of Kastina state His Excellency Masari Aminu says otherwise. Claiming that Nigeria's security has considerably improved in comparison to the past.
During a program on Channels, the governor of Kastina state Aminu Masari slammed Mohammadu Buhari critics saying that the security of the nation, is better than it was when he took over as president in 2015.
Masari who is also the Chairman of the North-West Governors’ Forum emphasized that Nigeria is economically appealing to bandits, drawing an analogy with countries like Niger, Chad, Mali, Senegal, and many more countries in the Sahel of Africa.
He stated that between Abuja and Kaduna while shuttling between both places that there are over 30 checkpoints.
In his opinion, he asked, “Is the situation the same today? It is not. Yes, there are kidnappers, there are bandits around but look at the whole world and look at the position of Nigeria in the Sahelian region. Are we not the richest? So, the attraction even for kidnappers to come to Nigeria is there. If you kidnap somebody in Mali, where are you going to get thousands? If I kidnap you in Nigeria, I get millions. So, all of us will have to rise to the occasion."
Well, it all depends on how he defines an improvement. Because as a nation there have never been an increased threat to lives and properties, than in recent times. Just today, many security officials have been killed by bandits in Anambra state.
Increasing check points does not necessarily translate to a better security condition as we have seen recently, it is only effective against less organized threats and not the very ones they were intended to curb.
There has to be some sort of solution to curb the problem of banditry, killer herdsmen, Boko Haram and kidnappings in the nation. Kindly tell us your take on the issue, do you agree with the governor of Kastina state?
