Good day Nigerians, here is the news I brought to you all after a man that was wrongly jailed for 23 years was said to be paid the sum of N205.7m.
A man identified as Curtis Flowers, was said to have spent 23 years in prison for a crime he didn't commit. Now circuit Judge George Mitchell ordered the state of Mississippi to pay him the sum of $500,000 (N205,780,000) in compensation for the wrong did.
According to reports, it was made clear that, Curtis Flowers was wrongly arrested for murder case and this took place in January 1997. Curtis Flowers was released in December 2019 after serving for 23 years.
Curtis Flowers lost 23 years of his life serving after being wrongly jailed, he was said to be paid $50,000 a year for 10 years as well as an additional $50,000 (20,578,000) in order to cover legal expenses.
It was said that, District Attorney Doug Evans has tried Curtis Flowers Six (6) times for the murder of four persons in a furniture store in a town identified as Winona close to Jackson.
It was also said that, two of the trial made resulted in hung Juries and four resulted in convictions as well as death sentence which was said to be overturned as a result Prosecutorial Misconduct.
It was made clear that, his defense argues that there was insufficient physical evidence and the witness statements were too weak to convict.
Reports also carried that, The US supreme Court voted 7-2 that Curtis Flowers was denied a fair trial after Evans refused to allow Black Jurors to take part in the trial
