El-Rufai's Call For The Recruitment of Youths To Fight Bandits Might Cause More Harm Than Good

The governor of Kaduna State, Malam Nasiru El-Rufai has publicly asked the Federal Government to recruit 774,000 youths from the 774 local government areas in the country to help fight banditry. He made this statement after receiving the third quarter security report from the Commissioner of Internal Security and Home Affairs, Mr. Samuel Aruwan, in Kaduna on Wednesday. Recall that Kaduna and many other northwestern states have been struggling to defeat bandits who are a thorn in the flesh of residents and motorists. A day hardly passes by without a report of these evil men causing mayhem across the region.

Though El-Rufai's plea isn't entirely bad, however, it might cause more harm than good due to the following reasons:

Firstly, before youths are recruited to fight bandits they must be given arms and ammunition to complete the task. If these ammunitions are given to them, some might start using them to intimidate others and engage in criminal activities.

Furthermore, after the bandits have been successfully defeated, it will be very difficult to get back the arms from the youths. Crimes like armed robbery and communal crises might increase in the country since guns and other sophisticated weapons will be readily available.

Additionally, the government will be required to put successful youths on a payroll, which might be very difficult to fulfill. It should be noted that the country is currently facing an economic downturn, as some state governments are still owing salaries. If the government should employ youths and fail to pay them at the right time, there might be chaos.

Instead of recruiting 774,000 random youths, the government should purchase more weapons for the military and other security agencies and watch how banditry will be defeated in no time.
