Banditry and mass kidnapping of students from their schools or residential areas are some of the major security threats being faced in the country. The ruthless behaviours of bandits have negatively impacted the economic growth and stability of the northwestern region of the country where such reports of violence have become rampant. This ugly incident will have increased if not for the new strategy and dedication put in place by the Nigerian security forces. What are the roots of these callous activities being perpetrated wantonly by bandits?
Confessions From Captured Bandits Leaders
When the notorious bandits leaders like Dogo Gide, Yellow, And Turji Kachalla were apprehended by the special tactical command deployed to tackle the menace of bandits, the officers gave newsmen the chance to interview some of these kingpins on various aspects including the reason they took up arms to fight and kidnap Nigerians. These bandits all confessed that they were humble farmers and petty traders. They live a simple life in remote villages of Zamfara state rearing their ruminant animals. What instigated them to formulate a banditry squad is that their cows were rustled by some criminals.
Turji Kachalla started building his criminal empire with members of his close family who were mostly orphans. He added that they were also victims because after their means of livelihood was disrupted, no one offered to help them. As a result of this, they started funding their criminal group by rustling cows belonging to innocent people in the region in order to buy weapons.
