[Opinion] Unknown Gunmen Attacks In The South-East And The Challenges of Leadership

The South-East region of Nigeria, which is home to the Igbos, has recently become a haven for unidentified gunmen who have been going around in the region, attacking security agents, individuals, and government infrastructures in the region. The five states in the South-East, have all had their fair share of barbaric attacks and killings by some unknown gunmen.

Recall that a couple of months ago, Imo state was almost torn apart by unknown gunmen attack and killings. Sadly, this is not what the region is known for. However, some criminal elements who derive joy in shedding the blood of their fellow humans, have in recent times, turned the once-peaceful region into the metaphorical slaughter’s slab where humans are wantonly killed like animals without any regard.

While the barbaric attacks and killings are going on in the South-East, the leaders of the region, including the five governors, have continued to condemn the attacks, and urge those behind such acts to sheath their swords, and embrace peace. Sadly, this has not been able to stop the gunmen from carrying out fresh attacks and killings in the region. The continued attacks have compelled the government, to deploy the military to the region.

There is no doubt that the activities of unknown gunmen in the South-East region have become worrisome, and there is a need for drastic measures to be taken against the culprits. However, the deployment of the military to the region, has been condemned by some individuals, with some seeing the move as a war declared on the region by the government. In Imo state, for instance, the governor, Senator Hope Uzodinma, has often been accused of inviting the military against his people.

With this, one may not be wrong to argue that the recent wave of unknown gunmen attack and killings in the South-East region, has undoubtedly presented the leadership of the region, one of the greatest challenges that comes with leadership. Arguably, the leaders of the region cannot fold their hands and watch as the gunmen are destroying the region. At the same time, many people appear not to be happy with the use of the military in an attempt to restore security in the region.

This can be argued to have become a serious leadership challenge for those in leadership positions. Arguably, solution to the surge of unknown gunmen attack and killings in the South-East region, lies in the use of security forces. However, with some people seeing the move as a declaration of war on the region, it becomes more difficult for the leaders of the region, to effectively discharge their duties, and still be in the good book of the people.
