Road Accident

Poor State Of Aliede/Otukpo-Enugu Road, The Need To Appreciate Youths Who Fill InThe Bad Portion

It is no longer news that Nigerian roads are death traps to their users. From the statistics released recently by the Federal Road Safety, figures of road accident-related deaths have moved from around 3,500 to about 6,000 annually (this is a population of a local government in some African countries) Most of these incidents are a result of bad roads.

The story is not different from the infamous notorious, daredevil and blood-sucking spot holes along Aliade Otukpo-Enugu road that caused a vivacious chain of accidents along that axis for years. On average, at least not less than 5 fully loaded trucks use to turn over at these spots. Apart from the precious lives of Nigerians, these spots holes have destroyed goods worth millions of naira annually.

What makes the matter a difficult one to be understood is, when you put into consideration billions of naira that are annually allocated to road construction in addition to yet other billions given to FERMA for the maintenance of federal roads including the Aliede - Otukpo road.

As a car owner, if you enter a deep ditch and it costs you a tyre or two, do you know how much that will pull out from your pocket? What if you have your shock absorbers leaked, you could imagine how much one of them cost in the market today.

Amid this dilemma, some of our poverty-stricken youths instead of taking to crime and criminality like others, have decided to do for the Nigerian citizens what governments at all levels have failed to do. They stand the fierce and scorching heat of the sun to excavate sand and fill most of these horrible spots and in this way, saving thousands of lives and millions of naira for Nigerians.

Do Nigerians appreciate them for the selfless service? A very skeletal number of us does while the majority perceives them as a nuisance and some call them jobless. We forget that the same jobless boys like them are smiling at the banks with huge sums of money from ransoms while some are dining and winning on negotiation tables in government houses after killing thousands of innocent Nigerians.

Do you know the painful aspect of this? The official criminals, popularly known as 'produce', forcefully collect huge sums of money from drivers and it disappears into individual pockets. But these poor boys are begging for so little. Give them N20 and listen to the prayers they offer for you. "Sir, God bless you, it shall be well with you, may God grant you increase".

Finally, I ask you, between these boys and the government, who justifiably deserve your taxation? When next you see them, stop and give them little money you will not die.
