In the past few months, the southeast region of Nigeria has been going through a lot of security challenges, thanks to the activities of unknown gunmen.

Aside from the recent killing of Dr. Chike Akunyili, the husband to late Dr. Dora Akunyili, some unknown gunmen, on Sunday, attacked and set on fire, the offices of the Department of State Services DSS in Nnewi, Federal Road Safety Corps FRSC, Nnewi, and also the country home of APC spokesperson in Lagos State, Mr. Joe Igbokwe.

These violent attacks have not just led to the destruction of lives and properties, but have plundered the southeast region into a period of tension, fear, and uncertainty.
In all of these, one question we should ask is this, where is Ebubeagu?
If we can recall, on April 11, 2021, the southeast Governors came together in Owerri, Imo State, and established the security outfit known as Ebube Agu. This security outfit was part of the plan that was set in place to tackle the rising unrest and violence going on in the region.

However, six months after forming Ebubagu, can we say that the security outfit has been effective in their responsibility, taking into consideration the security situation in the southeast? Or, have they gone into extinction?
In my opinion, nothing worthy of note has been heard of about Ebubeagu since it was formed, not that we know of at least.
Bearing this in mind, I think that the southeast Governors who formed the security outfit should take it up as a matter of priority, to look into why the group has failed to live up to expectations. If this is done, it will not only help to serve as a checkmate to the activities of unknown gunmen, but it will also prove that Igbo leaders are not complacent about the security situation in the southeast region.
