[Opinion] Unknown Gunmen Attacks Could Be Over Now That Their Native Doctors Have Been Exposed

The level of attacks on security agencies in the Southeast by Unknown Gunmen suspected to be members of the Eastern Security Network (ESN) has undoubtedly become one of the greatest challenges of the region. For some time now, Unknown Gunmen have continued to attack security facilities and burning them down, while security agents are also being killed in the process.

The gunmen who are suspected to be members of the ESN have carried out several attacks in the Southeast region particularly in Imo State. It should be recalled that the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra established the ESN as a local vigilante group to protect the old Eastern region against herdsmen attacks. But in recent time, members of the group have been accused of masquerading as unknown gunmen to carry out attacks on security agencies.

It is no longer news to us that sometimes when these gunmen are neutralized by the Police, charms are also recovered from them. Arguably, it is these charms that the group believed in for protections that boost their confidence and the belief that they could overrun security agencies and set them ablaze. Although the Unknown Gunmen have succeeded in burning down some police stations in the past, including a successful attack on the Command Headquarters and Nigeria Correctional Service facilities in Owerri, the recent turning of events in the State could see these attacks become a thing of the past.

With the recent arrest of two native doctors in the state who are alleged to be responsible for the preparation of the charms used by these gunmen and the identification of another native doctor from Anambra state who is also alleged to be among the group's native doctors, one may not be wrong to say that the gunmen have been stripped off their diabolical powers.

The disconnect between the gunmen and their native doctors arguably could lead to a reduction in the frequency and magnitude of attacks, and eventually, see it become a thing of the past. This could be possible due to the reliance of the group on charms to counter security agents. But without these native doctors who prepare the charms, the group may not be in high spirit to carry out further attacks in the State.
