2023 Polls: Police arrest fake Returning officer in C'River

Mr. Gabriel Agabi Akwaji, a university don, has been arrested by Police Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Ogoja Command, for impersonating a returning officer in Yache Ward, Yala Local Government Area (LGA) of Cross River State.

Akwaji impersonated the original returning officer of the ward, Dr. Dominic Gabriel Abakedi of the Department of Philosophy, University of Calabar.

Abakedi did not come with the result of the ward until around 2:00pm on Sunday which raised suspicion.

According to, the university lecturer did not only impersonate but also collated result using fake BVAS in order to mislead the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The results were allegedly prepared from other locations different from the polling units in Yache Ward as the BVAS used were not the same provided by INEC in Calabar.

The fake returning officer who has been arrested collated results from 33 polling units of the ward and was said to have been driven into Okpoma Collation Centre by a Chieftain of the ruling party.

He was arrested when he came to present the fake result which showed that the All Progressive Congress (APC) had over 5000 votes in Yache ward to the collation centre at Ogoja, Northern Senatorial District of the state.

It was learnt that some APC stalwarts in Yache ward arrested and detain all the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) agents in the area who were to partake in the conduct of the exercise just to carry out their nefarious acts.

They also mandated fake returning officer, Mr. Agabi to replace Dr. Dominic who was originally posted by the commission to the ward.
