On Thursday, March 2, 2023, a gruesome murder-suicide occurred at the Redemption Model Nursery and Primary School, Agba Dam, Ilorin, leaving onlookers shocked and saddened. According to eyewitness accounts, Sergeant Michael Olalere, a Mobile Police Officer attached to 15 PMF, Oyun area, Ilorin, shot and killed his lover, Bamidele Cecilia Oluwatosin, before turning the gun on himself.
The witness, Mr Olaleye Arodeyo, explained how the officer arrived at the school premises in his Toyota Corolla car, dressed in camouflage police uniform, a few minutes before his lover arrived with her son. Sergeant Olalere pulled out his AK-47 rifle and shot Oluwatosin three times in the chest at close range. She died on the spot, leaving onlookers stunned.
The officer then turned the gun on himself, shooting himself in the throat and blowing off part of his head. The two lovers were left lying in a pool of blood until the police arrived to evacuate their bodies an hour later. It was a gory scene that left many people wondering why Sergeant Olalere would take such a drastic and violent action.
Onlookers expressed their disbelief that a young and promising man like him would kill himself over a side chic, without considering the impact on his family. The incident has shocked the nation, with many calling for greater measures to address the issue of domestic violence and abuse.
