On the day of the sad incident, Blankson and his sisters were traveling to Bakana for a funeral.

There was a heavy downpour that day and the river was full of debris. Unluckily for them, the boat capsized.

Blankson, being a strong swimmer, dived into the river to help rescue those who had fallen overboard.

He swam in and out of the river 13 times to rescue the passengers without anyone assisting him.

While trying to save the 14th person, he became exhausted. That was how he tragically drowned.

It was the following day that his body was recovered. Blankson was buried the same day in the river according to the customs of drowning.

Before his death, he was a contractor who supplies diesel. He is survived by a wife and 2 children.

The Joe Blankson Foundation and Swimming Academy were set up on July 29, 2019, in his honor by his wife and family members to teach swimming and safety procedures for maritime travelers.

For sacrificing his life for others to live, his name will not be forgotten in a hurry.

May his soul continue to rest in peace. May God continue to give his family the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.
