837 Inmates Escape Oyo Prison, 262 Recaptured - Anjorin

A total number of 837 inmates who were awaiting trial have been reported to have escaped from Abolongo Correctional Centre situated in Oyo Town during an invasion of unknown gunmen on the center.

The Public Relations Officer, Olanrewaju Anjorin, said that the gunmen entered the facility with sophisticated ammunition and they gained access to the building by engaging the security guards in a heated encounter and then using dynamite to blow down the yard wall.

The 837 inmates were then set free by the gunmen without them vandalizing the cells containing them and the other convicts.

He later updated that of the 907 inmates that were in custody, 837 were awaiting trial, and 64 were convicts. He also said that 262 of the inmates who escaped had been recaptured with the remaining 575 were still roaming free.

“Following the directives of the Controller-General of Corrections, Haliru Nababa, the State Controller, Noel Ailewon, has commenced the process of search and recapture after visiting the scene of the incident,” Anjorin had said.

He told reporters that the state controller would not leave any stone unturned in the attempt to retrieve the remaining inmates still on the run and also requested for anyone with reliable information to aid the appropriate security agencies in tracking down and catching the fleeing inmates.
