The traditional ruler of Etekwuru community in the Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area of Imo State on Thursday night fled his palace half naked as yet to be identified hoodlums stormed the palace and set it ablaze.
His highlander jeep and other properties were reportedly also destroyed during the attack.
A national daily, The Punch, reports that the attackers stormed the king’s palace with explosives and when they could not find the monarch or any member of his family, set the building ablaze. They remained behind to monitor that the job was done before leaving.
The Punch quotes the monarch as saying he was at home with his wife when the hoodlums struck but managed to escape. He is currently hiding out at the Divisional Police Headquarters located at Mmahu and is soliciting for help from the public as he lost everything in the attack.
“I left my house with only boxers as all properties in my house burnt. I am calling for help from any good-spirited person to enable me to survive the shock, as I am now in the police station,” the monarch said.
The traditional ruler alleged that some youths who clashed with soldiers in the area about 24 hours earlier were responsible for the attack. The clash led to the killing of a soldier and the enraged military men in return allegdly burnt some houses in the community.
