Many feared dead as unknown gunmen set ablaze police station with officers inside

Unidentified armed men Thursday stormed Ajali police station in Anambra State, killing some police officers while setting the station alight.

It was learnt that the attackers on 30 September trapped officers inside the station located in Ajali town, headquarters of Orumba North local government area of the State, before setting it on fire.

Footage of the incident shared on Twitter shows some residents attempting to break open a wall for the trapped officers to possibly be rescued.

The attack comes a few days after unknown gunmen assassinated Dr Chike Akunyili, the widower of the late former minister of Information and director-general of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Prof Dora Akunyili.

He was shot dead on Tuesday 28 September alongside seven others at Nkpor in the Idemili North local government area of Anambra.
