Bandits devise another means of communication even with the shutdown of telecommunications networks.

It has been reported by a member of the house of Assembly in Sokoto State, Aminu Almustapha Gobir representing Sabon Birni North Constituency that bandits now use Nigerien networks to communicate and threaten communities and individuals.

As part of measures to check banditry, telecommunications networks had been shutdown by the Nigerian government in three States: Sokoto, Zamfara and Katsina State. This move has reportedly cut off communication between the bandits and their informants. But as a means of getting round this measure, the bandits now use telecommunications networks of Niger since it shares border with Nigeria through Sokoto State.

Mr. Gobir said he received a threat from one of the bandits who called him using a Nigerien network service. In his words he said: "the bandit was threatening to lead his gang to attack me and my community".

However, the commissioner for carriers and security matters, Colonel Garba Moyi (rtd) has said there is a possibility of the use of foreign networks to carry out attacks by bandits because of the proximity with Niger republic.
