After experiencing about two months of relative peace and respite from the activities of miscreants, the South-East is now gradually returning to the war zone it was at the peak of the activities of members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and "unknown gunmen."

In barely two weeks, there have been coordinated attacks on some influential persons in the South-East, including the husband of the late Dora Akinyuli, Dr. Chike Akunyili. Dr. Chike was shot dead by unknown gunmen in Anambra State a few days ago.
Sahara Reporters also reported how a student of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (Unizik) was shot dead by unknown gunmen, who also proceeded to burn down offices of the DSS and the Road Safety Corps in the state.

According to a report by Daily Post, the Ohaneze Ndigbo, an apex socio-cultural group of Igbo Elders is set to meet in Enugu State on Tuesday.
The writer opines that they should, as a matter of urgency, deliberate on the following:
1. The increasing activity of unknown gunmen in the South-East in recent times.
2. The purpose of the EBUBEAGU security outfit that was ceremoniously inaugurated by Igbo Governors earlier this year.

First, it is not yet clear if the killings by unknown gunmen in Anambra State is as a result of the tension of the forthcoming Anambra gubernatorial election, or of it is just a security crisis. This should be properly deliberated on.
Secondly, the EBUBEAGU, since its inauguration, has been relatively inactive amidst rising insecurity in the South-East. What then is the reason for its creation?

Indeed, the South-East is now a shadow of its former peaceful self. Unknown gunmen have now taken over the streets of the region, shooting at whomever stands on their way. Something urgent would have to be done if the present anarchy is to be curtailed.
