The sad and heartbreaking news of the rape and murder of the 26-year-old Iniobong in Akwa Ibom State is still a shock. The deceased was lured by an alleged serial rapist and killer, Uduak Akpan, under the guise of offering a job to the deceased. However, upon discovery of what transpired that led to the murder of the deceased, the suspect, Uduak Akpan was tracked down and arrested.
Following the arrest, more information about the deceased have emerged. One such piece of information is the academic performance of the deceased who is a graduate of Philosophy, University of Uyo. Recently, the GPA published by the department of Philosophy showed the Iniobong was a brilliant scholar who graduated with a GPA of 4.12 making her the seventh among the top graduating students in the 2018/2019 class.
As commented by Idorenyin Esikot, an associate professor and acting head, Department of Philosophy, University of Uyo, the late Iniobong would have been employed as a lecturer in the department if she had completed the mandatory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme. The acting Head of the Department confirmed the published GPA stating that the deceased was remarkable in her academic pursuit.
The incident has revealed how vulnerable young and brilliant graduates are in the pursuit of job opportunities in a country with a high unemployment rate. If the deceased knew about the job offer awaiting her, she would not have fallen a victim.
