[Opinion] Unknown Gunmen Attack In Anambra, And The Need For Improved Security In The State

Anambra State which is undoubtedly the commercial hub of the South-East region of Nigeria, has recently become a place where gunmen attack and kill people at will. The state which was known to be relatively peaceful, has recently witnessed several cases of attacks and killings by some unknown gunmen. Recall that not long ago, a prominent son of the state, Doctor Chike Akunyili, was shot and killed within the Nkpor area of the state (source: Vanguard Newspaper).

There have equally been several cases of attacks and killings in other parts of Anambra, including an attack on Police stations in Nnewi. Sadly, the attacks appear to be moving from bad to worse as the state’s governorship election is fast approaching. It should be recalled that the Anambra 2021 governorship election is scheduled to be held on November 6. However, a group of unidentified gunmen have often maintained that no elections will be held in the state.

Arguably, if nothing is done to the surge of unknown gunmen attacks in Anambra, it could impact negatively on the state’s forthcoming governorship election. As such, it is my view that there is a need to improve security in the state. This is due to the fact that continued attack by unknown gunmen, would scare away voters during the election. The implication of this is that a low turnout of voters could produce a governor who is not the real choice of the majority of Anambra people.

There is no doubt that the government has the capacity to ensure that there are adequate security officers in the state during the elections. However, this could create its own fear in the electorates. As such, I am of the view that there is a need for the government and relevant authorities, to as a matter of necessity, improve the security situation in Anambra as the state prepares for its November 6, 2021, governorship election.
