Nigerians are kind-hearted people as they turn out in large numbers to help those in need especially when their story and situation are made known to the public.
Days ago, the story of an amputee lady known as Mary from Kogi State went viral after it was made known to members of the public. According to the story, Mary reportedly lost her leg to a car accident and she had to struggle by hawking sachet water so as to survive since she also claimed to be an orphan. Nigerians believed her story after it went viral.
To this end, many people started making donations to her. People donated money and still shared Mary's story to make her get more public attention. No need of saying that the way Mary's story trended has made her a celebrity of sort. Apart from that, the huge amount of money raised for her which runs into millions of Naira will also make her live that celebrity lifestyle as that amount will change her life for good.
Mary's lies got leaked.
The story has now changed. It was discovered by Lagos State Government under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu that Mary's story was staged. It was also discovered that she told lies in the whole saga with some people helping her to stage the whole thing.
Consequently, the Lagos State Government has stepped into the case to ensure that Mary and her co-conspirators do not get away after pulling the wool over the eyes of members of the public who had raised huge amount of N25 million for her due to the cooked up story about her situation.
Concerning the lies Mary told, she lied that she lost her leg during an accident and that led to her being amputated. But, it was discovered that she was amputated from birth. Again, she lied that she is an orphan as her parents are no more. However, it was discovered that her father is still very much alive and kicking.
Again, Mary does not really hawk sachet water at Oshodi as portrayed. That hawking was just staged by her and her fellow conspirators to make the whole lies appear credible. To this end, the people that helped her to stage the story are now demanding their own share of the money and threatening to deal with her including leaking the whole plan to the public if she fails to keep to their agreement.
Two things that may happen to Mary.
As it stands now, Mary is in custody of Lagos State Social Welfare officials with the Lagos State Police Command fully involved in the issue as investigation has commenced to ascertain more facts concerning the case. At the end of the investigation when the whole facts have emerged, Mary may be prosecuted and made to face the law for obtaining donations and other things from members of the public through pretense. She and those that conspired with her may be jailed.
Secondly, Mary will most likely lose the N25 million donation that Nigerians raised for her. Already, the Lagos State Government has held back the money. It wanted to hand the money over to Mary but after the lies got leaked, the money was held back while investigation is going on. Mary and her conspirators have really betrayed the trust of Nigerians that it may be hard for Nigerians to come to the aid of others whose helpless situation is genuine. What a big disappointment.
