The Number '419' Is Used To Refer To Criminals, See Why.

419 is a popular slang specifically used in Nigeria and other western African countries to refer to criminals. Generally, we come across houses, lands and other properties with warning against these fraudsters referred by this name.

Basically, the definition of the Slang is generally accepted but the originality of the slang or number is still a mystery to many.

The term “419”, also known as scam or fraud is coined from Section 419 of the Nigerian criminal code. It states that:- Any person who by any false pretense, and with intent to defraud, obtains from any other person anything capable of being stolen, or induces any other person to deliver to any person anything capable of being stolen, is guilty of a felony, and is liable to imprisonment for three years".

This is quite different from another term called "Advance fee fraud", this case involves promising the victim a significant share of a large sum of money, in return for a small up-front payment, which the fraudster claims will be used to obtain the large sum, but the fraudster could be referred to as 419 also.

The 419 fraud scheme was a variation of the confidence swindle, which preys on peoples’ greed and naïveté. However, it is so factual to state that anybody accused of fraudulent acts involving huge sum of money to some certain extent should not be addressed as a 419.

These days, the slang has grown so popular that it is often used to refer to minor offence and amusement.
